A breakdown of London Tenders and where to find them

It’s no surprise that there is an abundance of London tenders going in almost every industry. The capital city has a lot to offer in terms of tendering opportunities. Money is constantly being pumped in from both the public and private sectors.

London local authorities spend approximately £9 billion a year on the procurement of goods and services. Now more than ever, local boroughs are looking to increase investment in their own areas. Not only that, but they’re hoping to involve multiple local businesses to be part of the supply chain.

The UK government has even implemented a scheme to award more contracts to SMEs. They have a target of spending at least £1 in £3 with SMEs. This means that public organisations are actively looking to support and award contracts to smaller businesses. Obviously, this is great news if you’re an SME and looking to branch into the world of procurement.

London Procurement Strategy Board (LPSB)

The LPSB was formed to assess what opportunities exist to achieve greater savings in 2010. They act as the governance board (when required) for London-wide procurement projects. They review existing and new proposal and framework structure across London in order to support consistent and coherent development.

Its membership includes representatives from the London Procurement Network, the Society of London Treasurers and London Councils. The LPSB provides a forum for sharing learning, expertise and good practice between London local authorities.

London tenders in the public sector

The public sector must comply with the Public Contracts Regulations 2015. If contracts exceed certain thresholds, they must be advertised on the governments Find a Tender (FTS). This originally was known as the OJEU but has now transitioned to FTS due to Brexit. There are a lot more rules and regulations surrounding public sector contracts.

London tenders within the public sector would primarily be focused on local councils and government procurement. For example, Transport for London has an annual budget in the billions and are constantly procuring works, goods and services. There can be many lucrative opportunities within London tenders.

Social value and environmental considerations

The Mayor of London aims for London to be a zero-carbon city by 2030. This has obvious implications when applying for London tenders. You can expect increased weightings on social value and environmental impacts. If applying for a public sector tender, then you will need to include a full-proof response to social value. Social value responses should focus on the social, economic and environmental aspects – not just value for money.

London tenders in the private sector

The London tenders within the private sector aren’t subject to the same rules and regulations as the public sector. Private buyers will often look for suppliers who can provide a contract at a competitive price. This can be difficult for tender writers as pricing may outweigh the quality side of submissions. Pre-established working relationships can also have a part to play when private sector contracts are awarded. To succeed, you need to show the buyers that what you bring is unique and goes above their current suppliers.
